In the field of illumination engineering and lighting design everything starts with the choice of the right light source. All the basic qualities of the light lie within the light source. You can never add to light qualities later on, you can only remove them. Choosing the right light source is the first and maybe the most important step when you make your lighting design.
You have to consider all the aspects of the light source, and here, like in many other areas, there is no free lunch! Everything is a trade off, you can't have it all. In order to choose the right light source for the task at hand you must prioritize between the different abilities and qualities.
